Here’s the sad truth about dorm decoration: Everyone gets their shit from the same places. And while there’s a good reason that you should buy your bed risers from, say, Target and not the sketchy Portuguese grocery store down the street (those are not bed risers, they are expired cans of soup), you don’t want the same ambiance as everyone else. 1. Rep your hometown.

You need something that will remind you of the place you grew up. Otherwise, you might literally forget where you grew up. Friends will ask, “Where are you going for Thanksgiving?” and you will respond, startled and confused, “Oh… I’m not sure… Hm…” But if you have a poster, you won’t forget.

2. Make a joke everybody will get.

Upon seeing this poster in your room, every single person in the world would think “Oh, I also thought that well known line of that wildly popular movie was pretty funny! This person and I have the same sense of humor and should be friends!

3. Declare your fandom.

A slightly smaller subset of people will immediately recognize this poster. But actually one of my favorite things about Harry Potter fans is that they act like a tiny insane group of outlier-fans, while they are actually at least 50% of our generation. When one of these people sees this poster on your wall, they will identify you as a kindred spirit.

This is a very cool poster. It would look even cooler if you were on drugs. Think about that for a second.

5. Unleash your inner nerd.

The people who laugh at this poster are the people who you should be friends with for life. Anyone who enjoys a good Sartre joke is pretty good in my book. If Sartre isn’t your thing, maybe Edison is. Maybe they both are. If neither Sartre nor Edison is your thing, reevaluate your life.

6. Be weird.

This is a dog on a bicycle on newsprint. I have no explanation. But I’m telling you, you need this poster. I mean, for god’s sake, it’s a dog on a bicycle.

7. Calm down.

Some kind of nice soothing art will serve you well during those crazy evenings of staying up studying or getting drunk and hating life or feeling rejected by the universe. I promise, those nights will happen, and you will get very little comfort from the dog on the bicycle. He’s just mocking you. A nice watercolor landscape, on the other hand, will be exactly what you need.

8. Look up!

Do we not all need cheesy inspirational quotes on our walls once in a while? Remember this when you are drunk and hating life. Look at the pleasant inspirational poster. This experience will be excellent fodder for your memoir, one of these days.

9. Be worldly.

Everyone needs a world map. What if you forget where Asia is? This map will help you! If you need any information more specific than that, I recommend the internet.

10. Treat yoself.

You’re in college. You are literally in one of the only phases of life where you are expected to make super dumb decisions most of the time. Own it. Eat ice cream from a vending machine at four in the morning because you’d rather do that than have a cigarette (your other bad-decision-of-choice these days). This poster says it’s fine.
